Ode to a Dead i. Mac. A couple of weeks ago, I had to lay my eight year old i. Mac to rest. After years of faithful service, it had finally died beyond repair. ![]()

I do not like shopping for new computers, nor do I like spending money on them. To me, buying a new computer is as exciting as buying a new dryer. Take a second to think back to 2. President Obama was still in his first year of office, Sweden legalized gay marriage, Taylor Swift was still considered a country music artist, and one of the most popular i. Phone apps was Tweetie 2. My new i. Mac came with arguably the best Mac operating system of all time, OS X Snow Leopard. With Snow Leopard, Apple had finally nailed what OS X was meant to be. ![]() The main purpose of the update was speed, and with that came increased performance, efficiency, and stability. It refined Leopard and the previous versions of OS X into something that anyone could use happily with no major problems. I had saved up all my money that year to buy a new 2. Mac. I tricked it out as much as I could, with an upgrade to the i. GB of RAM, and the wired Apple keyboard. It was the most expensive single purchase I’d ever made at the time. In fact, to this day, it’s still the most expensive single purchase I’ve ever made, which is kind of incredible considering I was working a full- time, $8/hour job and trying to freelance write on the side while also going to grad school in 2. Eight years later, I can say that the i. Mac was well worth the price. How many of us can say we’ve owned anything for eight years, let alone a computer that saw heavy usage every single day? Some people don’t even keep cars that long. Of course, that time wasn’t without hardships. In 2. 01. 2 I had to replace the graphics card and hard drive, and in 2. I finally replaced the far outdated Super. Drive with an SSD. But otherwise, it carried on for at least 1. I can’t even begin to imagine how many words I’ve typed into that computer. Even thinking about how many blog posts were hacked away at that thing makes me sick. It also ran an old version of Photoshop fine, and it worked perfectly well for the short videos I’ve made for this site over the years. Whatever random version of Logic I had loaded up worked well enough for whatever dumb music thing I decided to make. In fact, while it couldn’t run any modern games, it could run about everything else fine. Which says a lot about not only the build quality of that i. Mac, but the state of computers in general these days. Why upgrade? Everything’s fine enough. For most of those eight years, the i. Mac was my only computer. Though I had a spat of random laptops through those years, they never saw that much usage. A Mac. Book Air here, or an older Mac. Book there, those laptops came with me to coffee shops or when I travelled for work, but that was about it. I never felt attached to them like I did that i. Mac or had the same kinship I felt with my very first Power. Book G4. To this day, those old aluminum Power. Books have my favorite keyboard of all time. Those eight years with my i. Mac saw plenty of moves with ample opportunity to crack that fancy glass screen or break the classy aluminum stand. That damn computer went from apartment to apartment in Colorado, then ventured along to a couple different places in Seattle, before landing in Los Angeles, where it came to die. Its death was not a surprise. I knew it was coming. You can feel these types of things coming. You just know. It started randomly rebooting one day, before eventually moving onto kernel panics. By the end, the screen would glitch out into a vaporwave masterpiece before it rebooted again. Perhaps it was the graphics card again. Or maybe the logic board. Regardless, finding a replacement wasn’t going to be possible, nor worth the time and money. Proving perhaps that the i. Mac was once the Honda Civic of computers, 2. Macs still sell on e. Bay for $4. 00- $5. I replaced the i. Mac with a refurbished 2. Mac. Book Pro without Touch Bar and an LG 2. Thankfully, the i. Mac had enough life left in it to push through the migration process. But, despite the technical upgrade, it’s just not the same. Once that was done, it was time to lay the poor machine to rest. My faithful friend of so many years was to be wiped clean, collected together, and eventually hauled off to a recycling center. It’s a sad end for such a reliable beast, but when the time comes to move on, we must accept that fact and do so. IRIScan Book 5 Wi. Fi Review & Rating. Not long ago, there were a fair number of handheld, or wand, scanners like the IRIScan Book 5 Wi. Fi ($1. 49) on the market, but they have become less common. The primary difference between these and most other types of scanners is that you move it over the material you're scanning, rather than the machine itself moving the content over the scanning sensor. As with the Editors' Choice Vu. Point Solutions Magic Wand Wi- Fi PDSWF- ST4. VP, with the Book 5 you can scan without a PC, send your scans to mobile devices, and it comes with software for converting scanned text to editable text. Unlike the Magic Wand, the Book 5 includes a 4. GB micro. SD card and it lets you scan directly to a PC or mobile device. These perks were more than enough to elevate the IRIScan Book 5 Wi. Fi to our new Editors' Choice for wand scanners. Design and Features. At first glance, the Book 5 looks a lot like the IRIScan Anywhere 5 Wi. Fi portable sheet- feed scanner we reviewed recently, but these two devices are quite different. With the Anywhere 5, a conventional, non- wand model, you feed documents and photos to the scanner, and with the Book 5 you drag the scanner over what you're scanning. The Book 5 is so named because it is designed primarily for scanning pages in books and magazines, without having to tear them out. At 2. 2 by 1. 0. 2 by 1. HWD) and weighing 5. Magic Wand (1. 1 by 1. IRIScan makes two versions of the Book 5, the Wi- Fi version that we're reviewing here, which comes in black, and a non- Wi- Fi version that comes in red, turquoise, or white. Scanning is controlled from a set of buttons—Power, Scan, Menu, Up Menu, Down Menu, DPI, File Format, Trash (Delete), Wi- Fi, Back, and Playback—anchored by a 1. LCD. The opposite end of the scanner, where you hold it, is tapered slightly for easier gripping. On the top edge resides a mini. USB port for charging and transferring data, and on the bottom edge is a slot for the aforementioned 4. GB micro. SD card. Inside, there's a rechargeable battery that IRIS says is good for about 1. Anywhere 5, a bit small. However, you can scan while the device is connected to your PC's USB port or another USB power source. In other words, the device can scan and charge at the same time. In addition to the micro. SD card, you also get a USB cable and a vinyl drawstring bag for carrying the Book 5 around with you. When scanning to the micro. SD card, supported file formats are JPEG, PDF, and multipage PDF. Setup and Software. Setting up the Book 5 entails unpacking it, inserting the micro. SD card, and charging it via USB. Charging takes about an hour and a half. There's no software in the box, so you'll have to go online to get it. IRIS requires you to register the device before you can download the software, and you must register the software itself before it becomes fully functional. Unlike the Anywhere 5, which comes with both Readiris Pro (an optical character recognition, or OCR, and rudimentary document management program) and Cardiris (a business card scanning and archiving program), the Book 5 comes with only Readiris Pro—most likely because scanning something as small as a business card with a handheld scanner like this isn't particularly easy. In addition to Readiris, the software bundle includes Instant. Result, a utility that allows you to scan directly to your PC or mobile device via either Wi- Fi or USB, a feature that is unavailable with the Vu. Point Solutions Magic Wand. Readiris is an industry standard OCR program that comes with many scanners and multifunction printers, not just IRIS products. In addition, IRIS offers its IRIScan Book App for scanning to or uploading scans to both Apple i. OS and Android mobile devices. Performance. Given the nature of this scanner, IRIS doesn't publish a pages- per- minute (ppm) rating; scanning speed depends on how quickly and steadily you can pass the scanner over the content. What the company does say, though, is that you can scan a color A4 page at high resolution (6. Once you have the desired resolution and file type configured, the process for scanning entails pressing the Scan button, dragging the scanner across the page, and then pressing the Scan button again. If you're scanning to the SD card, your scan displays on the LCD. When using Instant. Result, scans display in that program's application window, from which you can convert scanned text to editable text, as well as export your scans in various file formats, including Microsoft Word and searchable PDF. When scanning to the SD card, you can upload your scans to Readiris in several ways: via Wi- Fi or USB from the scanner itself, drag- and- drop, or by inserting the micro. SD card in to the adapter that comes in the box in to your PC. When you upload files with the memory card inside the scanner, your PC (and Readiris) sees it as a removable drive. No matter which method you use—uploading from the scanner itself or inserting the SD card into your PC—Readiris automatically finds new scans and prompts you to import them into the program. See How We Test Scanners. Holding the scanner and passing it over content requires practice, and to get the best results, you need a fairly steady hand. My experience was that the more I scanned, the better I got at it, to the extent that I was able to scan several pages per minute. Since so much of this process is manual, though, trying to come up with a pages- per- minute rate isn't really practical. That said, no matter whether I scanned to the micro. SD card or to the PC itself, Readiris and Instant. Result, respectively, processed the scans to both image and searchable PDF at a respectable clip. OCR Accuracy. For the most part, aligning the Book 5 properly when scanning the pages in books or magazines is fairly simple; the binding provides a good reference point, and the opposite side of the book, the side you're not scanning, gives you something to hold onto. That said, during my tests, when my hand was steady and pages weren't overly skewed (which, again, I got much better at with a little practice), Readiris converted text scanned at 3. Times New Roman and Arial test pages, which is the same results we got from Readiris when testing the Anywhere 5, as well as several other portable scanners we've tested. The Vu. Point Solutions Magic Wand, on the other hand, scanned our Times New Roman page successfully down to 1. Arial page at 8 points. We should also point out that both Readiris and Instant. Result have the ability deskew pages, and in both cases it worked reasonably well. Conclusion. If you're looking for a portable scanner for scanning and processing letter- size document pages, there are all kinds of more appropriate solutions than the IRIScan Book 5 or the Book 5 Wi. Fi. If, on the other hand, you need to scan pages that are attached to publications, such as, say, magazines, books, journals, and notebooks, the IRIScan Book 5 is one of the better solutions I know of. Unlike its direct competitor, the Vu. Point Solutions Magic Wand, it comes with the micro. SD card required to operate it, and it can scan directly to a PC using the Instant. Result software. The Book 5 (and its ilk) may not be the easiest way to scan, but it does provide a viable alternative to removing the pages that you need to scan from the publications they're attached to.
